Local hopefuls Jason Kasdorf and Peter Stoykewich are ready to go as the Winnipeg Jets prepare to hold their 2013 prospect development camp starting on Monday, July 15. The camp will go on until July 19 at the MTS Iceplex.
The camp will bring top prospects in the organization, including 2013 first rounder Josh Morrissey, 2012 first rounder Jacob Trouba and 2011 first rounder Mark Scheifele. Obviously, the Jets coaching staff will be eager to evaluate their progress within the organization.
Among the prospects coming to this years camp will be all 10 draft picks from the 2013 draft, as well as a couple of Winnipeg products: Kasdorf and Stoykewych.
Kasdorf will make his second appearance at Jets development camp, after participating in 2012’s addition. Kasdorf, who is 6-foot-3, 178-pounds, has the size and tools to be a successful professional goaltender.
He spent time with the Winnipeg Thrashers Triple A Midget Club before joining the Portage Terriers of the MJHL in the 2009-10 season. He posted a solid 19-10-5 record with two shutouts, a 2.55 GAA and .911 save percentage.
Kasdorf’s best season as a Terrier came a year later. During the 2010-11 season he played in 34 games during the regular season, where he finished a stellar 24-10-o record with two shutouts, a 2.53 GAA and .912 save percentage. Kasdorf’s numbers got better in the post-season as he allowed just 22 goals in 16 games including both the MJHL and Anavet Cup playoffs. The Terriers won the Turnbull Cup Championship and then took Anavet Cup title after a thrilling seven-game series against La Ronge of the SJHL.
Kasdorf was ranked 10th among North American goalies going into the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and was selected in the sixth round, 157th overall.
Kasdorf spent the 2011-12 season in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers and spent the 2012-13 season in the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Hockey League with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. In 23 games with RPI, Kasdorf posted a 14-5-2 record with three shutouts, an impressive 1.62 GAA and .935 save percentage.
Kasdorf will join five other goalies at camp, including 2013 second-round draft pick, Eric Comrie.
Like Kasdorf, Stoykewych will be taking part in his second Jets development camp. Drafted in the seventh round (199th overall) in 2010, the big defenseman brings size, speed and puck moving ability to the 2013 camp.
Stoykewych spent two seasons playing with the MJHL’s Winnipeg Blues. He recorded 16 points, including four goals in his rookie campaign in 2008-09 before having a breakout season the following year.
Stoykewych was one of the top puck-moving defenceman in the MJHL, scoring six goals and adding 25 assists in 56 games played during the 2009-10 season. He played for Team West at the World Junior A Challenge and was selected to the CJHL Prospects game.
Stoykewych spent 2010-11 with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL where he played on the second defensive unit, recording five goals and 10 assists through 58 games.
Stoykewych committed to Colorado College for the 2011-12 season and made the team as a freshman, playing in 26 games. He contributed three assists as a rookie and had an even plus-minus rating playing on the third defensive pairing.
In his sophomore year, Stoykewych played in all 42 games, contributing two goals, nine assists and 20 penalty minutes. The Tigers made him an assistant captain.
