Stoykewych, Kasdorf off to Jets Development Camp

By Scott Billeck

Winnipeg duo, goaltender Jason Kasdorf and defenseman Peter Stoykewych, will attend the Winnipeg Jets Development Camp later month. Both will try to impress the Jets brass alongside the likes of Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba.

Stoykewych, a former member of the Winnipeg Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and current member of the Colorado College Tigers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, will join the Jets development camp for the second time after being selected last year, as well.

“Peter made strides in a number of areas this year,” noted Colorado College Assistant Coach, Eric Rud, in talking to Rheanne Marcoux of the Winnipeg Jets via the club’s official AHL affiliate, St. John’s Ice Caps, website. “He emerged into our top defensive shut-down defender. He earned the coaching staffs trust in all key situations. He became a leader as the season went along.”

Stoykewych himself is just happy to be in the Jets organization.

“Getting drafted by Atlanta was special enough in itself, but to be able to one day play in Winnipeg, it was obviously a huge deal for me,” reflected the Winnipegger. “Being from Winnipeg, I mean everybody dreams of one day playing in the NHL, but to have a chance to do it in front of your family and friends, that would be unbelievable. It’s just that much more incentive to work harder to make it.”

Kasdorf, the former Portage Terrier, will also make his way to the MTS Iceplex as one of six goaltenders, inclduding Eric Comrie, who was selected in the second round of this year’s 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Kasdorf was taken in the sixth round, 157th overall, back in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, and will have some stiff competition from the likes of Comrie, whom the Jets regard quite highly.

Kasdorf played last season with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of the ECAC, an NCAA Division 1 club. He put up some impressive numbers, too, posting a 14-5-2 record, with a stellar 1.62 goals-against average, and a .935 saves percentage, while racking up three shutouts in the process.

The Winnipeg Jets Development Camp takes place from July 15 – 19 at the MTS Iceplex and will bring together the Jets top prospects for the Jets brass to evaluate.
