In the MJHL, All Addison Teams Will Now Make the Post-Season

By Scott Billeck

Addison Division teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League got a nice present on Wednesday.

The MJHL released their new format for the upcoming 2013-14 playoffs and according to a press release from the league, “an additional two teams will participate in the MJHL post-season this upcoming spring.”

More teams will have a chance to raise the Turnbull Cup.

“Under the new format, teams finishing fifth in their respective divisions will play the fourth-place team in a best-of-three series. The winner is then declared the fourth seed, playing the first-place team in a best-of-seven series.”

What this means for the league’s Addison Division is that the fifth place team will have a shot at making the playoffs through the best of three wildcard format.

“Other leagues refer to this new format as a “Survivor Series”, or wild card playoff,” MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis said. “It’s proven very popular with the fans of those teams finishing fourth and fifth. In many situations, the point difference between fourth and fifth is minimal. The new format is specifically designed to see the best team advance.”

The MJHL is comprised of 11 teams split into two divisions, the Addison and the Sherwood.  Six of those teams play in the Sherwood Division, while the other five play in the Addison.

The press release stated that the new format was accepted at a special meeting of the Board of Governors earlier this month.

“It’s strongly felt that this new format will generate even more fan excitement throughout the league,” said Davis.

As most amateur sports leagues have found, you just can’t have too many teams involved in the post-season.
