Coates Hired As New E.D. for Football Manitoba

Football Manitoba has hired former Winnipeg Blue Bombers media director and chief photographer for The Huddle and Manitoba Hockey News, Shawn Coates, as its new executive director.

Coates replaces Ron East who was let go in October of 2013.

Coates is also the former Director of Communications & Marketing at the University of Winnipeg and Director of Football Operations with the Canadian Football League.

“I’m going to go in there and run the programs and make things happen,” Coates said yesterday.

From 2000 to 2004, Shawn served as Director of Media & Public Relations for the Blue Bombers where he managed all communications & marketing activities for the club. A professional photographer, Shawn has also held communications positions with the International Basketball Association and the Winnipeg School Division, and worked for a time as editor of Uptown Magazine and as a news and sports reporter for many community newspapers.

He has been the chief photographer for The Huddle and Manitoba Hockey News since their inception in 2012. He has also been featured as a photographer in USA Today, the Toronto Sun, La Presse,, Winnipeg Hockey Talk, Arizona Hockey Talk, and the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

While with the CFL, Coates created the league’s Instant Replay program, developed a digital video exchange infrastructure and implemented a cardio-vascular screening program for players and coaches. As the CFL’s policy writer, he created the league’s code of conduct, Dress Code and Sideline policies.

Most recently, he has been chief operating officer for Winnipeg-based Local Exclusive Offers.
