Leading scorer Aaron Lewadniuk scored 35 seconds into the second period and Jordan DePape found the empty net with 15 seconds left to play as the University of Manitoba Bisons beat the UBC Thunderbirds 2-0 on Saturday night.
Joe Caligiuri picked up the shut out and defenseman Dane Crowley was a plus-two as the Bisons clinched fourth place in Canada West and will now play host to one of the two 2014 Canada West Quarter Final best-of-three playoff series. The Bisons will face the Mount Royal College Cougars at Wayne Fleming Arena from Feb. 21-23.
After losing 5-2 to UBC on Friday night, Saturday night’s victory was huge as Manitoba finished the regular season with a 12-12-4 record. Manitoba has played Mount Royal College four times this season and boasts a 3-1 record against the Cougars. On the road Manitoba won 1-0 on Oct. 18 and lost 3-2 on Oct. 19. At home, Manitoba swept a pair of games, winning 5-2 on Jan. 10, and 5-3 on Jan. 11.
Mount Royal College entered Canada West play in the 2012-13 season and will make its first post-season appearance this season. Last season in the conference playoffs, the Bisons swept Regina 2-0 at home in the quarterfinal best-of-three series and then lost 2-1 in the semifinal best-of-three series at Saskatchewan.
