The Winnipeg Jets have signed 28-year-old free-agent forward Shawn Matthias to a two-year contract worth $4.25 million.
It will be an annual cap hit of $2.125 million.
Matthias is a 6-foot-4, 225-pound centre from Mississauga, who was originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (47th overall) of the 2006 NHL entry draft out of the OHL’s Belleville Bulls.
He’s played all or parts of 10 NHL seasons with Florida, Vancouver, Toronto and Colorado. Last season, in 51 games with Toronto he had six goals and 17 points and in 20 games with Colorado, he had six goals and 11 points. In total (12 goals, 28 points), he was minus 17.
He has been called, “A hard worker. A big, strong forward with a good nose for the net who is able to turn innocent plays into scoring opportunities. Has very strong hockey sense and is a capable penalty killer.”
In 479 NHL games, Matthias has 81 goals and 159 points.
